The Premier Solution for Spent Catalyst Disposition
AMG Vanadium produces ferrovanadium and related ferroalloys from spent refinery catalysts using our proprietary pyrometallurgical process. Spent hydroprocessing catalysts represent an
environmental problem for many refiners. Disposal in a landfill does not eliminate the long-term environmental hazards and legal
responsibility associated with this material. Catalyst disposition through conversion to another material is a solution that offers important ecological and cost-saving benefits to the refiner's stakeholders, to the community-at-large and to our environment.
We provide that solution. Through the full-circle use of secondary industrial materials, state-of-the-art technology and proven expertise, AMG Vanadium offers refiners a permanent and cost-effective choice.
Catalyst Processing and Metal Recovery
The primary service performed by AMG Vanadium is the processing of spent oil refinery catalysts. These include the family of hydroprocessing catalysts used for hydrocracking, hydrotreating (K171), and hydrorefining (K172). AMG Vanadium completely converts these spent catalysts into commercial products, thus ending the refiners' stewardship responsibility. A certificate of consumption is available as proof of the completion of processing.
Metals in the catalyst (V, Ni, Mo, Co, W) are converted to alloys such as FEROVAN® and FeNiMoly®
alloy, which are sold to steel companies. These elements are added to steel to impart the physical properties required in its end use - for example strength, abrasion and chemical resistance, and low-temperature toughness. These metals are direct substitutes for alloys otherwise produced from ores and the metal oxides, offering additional environmental and cost advantages. The
Revan™ generated by AMG Vanadium is sold to the steel companies to improve the performance of their steel making operation.
International Logistics
AMG Vanadium has decades of experience in safely shipping a variety of vanadium-bearing raw materials. We can also call upon the expertise of several affiliate companies world-wide to assist in logistics. Some of these materials are categorized as hazardous waste in the country of origin and/or in the USA. AMG Vanadium has assisted hazardous-waste generators with the completion of import/export notification requirements established by governments in Europe, Canada and Mexico, as well as by the USEPA. We offer solid advice backed by experience regarding USEPA and DOT requirements related to documentation, placarding and labeling.
Multiple-Mode Delivery Capability
AMG Vanadium has received raw materials via virtually all modes of transportation and packaging. Each source of material has established procedures or preferences concerning these issues. We work closely with each refinery customer, and assess their individual situation, to develop the safest and least-expensive combination of packaging and transportation that benefits both parties.
Strategic Central Location
Our Cambridge, Ohio facility is ideally situated to receive material from throughout North America. We currently offer service to refiners in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Our facility includes its own rail line, and is situated at the junction of Interstate Highway 77 (north/south) and Interstate Highway 70 (east/west), within five minutes of Cambridge Airport. Click here for a closer look at the advantages of our location.
In-House Laboratory Services
AMG Vanadium has many years of experience in analyzing samples from all types of potential raw materials, incoming materials and finished product. Our
Cambridge, Ohio on-site laboratory is equipped with an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrophotometer for elemental identification and measurement, as well as Leco analyzers for carbon and sulfur. We also boast extensive wet analytical capabilities. We rely on local, qualified outside laboratories for special analyses, including those tests required for the purposes of environmental considerations.

Sampling
Sampling is essential in determining the composition of incoming raw materials. Our spent catalysts team has developed a stable of in-house methods for material sampling. Independent inspection companies have commented often about the high quality of
AMG
Vanadium's sampling capability. We work cooperatively with the environmental, engineering and laboratory staff of our refinery customers to establish the most appropriate sampling procedure to use in characterizing a material.
Containment Capability
AMG Vanadium has invested heavily, both in terms of money and time, to safely contain raw materials on-site. Our commitment to this effort is backed by a $14-million investment. Click here for more information regarding our environmental commitment. Some facilities used in our material containment and processing include:
- RCRA building of 60,000sq. ft., fully enclosed.
- RCRA-compliant pad for storing properly packaged spent catalysts.
- RCRA-approved bulk rail car unloading conveyor.
- Fully enclosed material conveyor systems.
- New fully enclosed briquettor, including material transportation and dedicated baghouse.
- New furnace room baghouse to significantly reduce particulate matter.
Summary
Through a coordinated effort and vigorous capital spending program, AMG Vanadium has established itself as a company focused on the services which can be relied upon by companies generating specific secondary material streams such as spent refinery catalyst.
Our many years of experience make us a premier choice for the handling, processing and permanent conversion of all types of metal-bearing materials, including spent refinery catalysts.
