Chemical Descriptions

Chlorine - The 17th atomic element was discovered in 1774. Because it is highly reactive, chlorine is found in nature only in combination with other materials like sodium.

At room temperature, chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas that is about 2.5 times heavier than air. It is not the liquid you pour into a washing machine or the granules used to disinfect a backyard swimming pool. Those are combinations of chlorine and other chemicals.

Chlorine ranks among the top 10 in volume of all chemicals produced in the world. It is considered a "workhorse" of the industry, and has been described by "Chemical & Engineering News" as the single material on which the manufacture of other chemicals most depends.

Vanadium Oxytrichloride (VOCl3) - At normal room temperature, vanadium oxytrichloride is a bright yellow liquid that has a distinct chlorine type odor. It fumes when left in an open container and must be kept under a blanket of inert gas to keep it from reacting with the moisture in the air. VOCl3 hydrolyzes upon contact with any form of water (including water vapor in the air) forming vanadic acid and hydrochloric acid as well as VOCl2 (solid). When left open to the air VOCl3 forms a large amount of an orange gas cloud that is a mixture of the above hydrolyzation product as well as free chlorine. The effects of exposure to VOCl3 are similar to the effects of exposure to chlorine, but may be more pronounced.
